My Journey

This is my journey to see the ancient Angkor temples (Prasat) in Cambodia. My first trip back to Cambodia since 2000, a few years after the war end by the communist, I had chance to visit Angkor Wat and its surround temples. Due to safety reason, I could only visit the temples near Angkor Wat, and returned back to city in the afternoon or when the sun went down.

My second trip was very memorable, I enjoyed so much. Well planning along with good fortune, I had a chance to visit most of the temples, and enjoy every moment while visiting and travelling between them.

Born and raise in village along the Mekong lake to small merchant and farmer parent. Grow corn, tobacco, rice to make the living.

My Journey

Angkor Wat visitor

My name is William Tan, born in Cambodia, raised by my forgiven parent. The war tore down Cambodia after the revolution to overthrow king Norodom Sihanouk and his family on the 18th, March 1970. My home town is on the south east side of Mekong River about 40km from Phnom Penh city. The war reached my area around August 1970, that was when the opposition group, known as Khmer Rouge communist, penetrated all villages around my town after the sundown to induce and recruit all villagers to join their side, men, women including juniors younger than 12 years old were also welcome.

I fled to Phnom Penh city around October, 1970, not sure what I wanted to do back then, but trying to get away from the communist recruiter. When living in the City, led by my oldest brother who was a school teacher, mentored and brought my mind back to continue my study. During those years from 1970 to 1975, while living in city, especially around 1973-1975, life in the city was very fearful and depressed. The artillery shell from Khmer Rouge fired from distance, happened anytime. The cost of goods were skyrocking and money was also difficult to find.

Other tragedy came along, Khmer Rouge won the war April 16th, 1975. All people in Phnom Penh were forced to move out or faced execution by Khmer Rouge if they resisted to stay in the city. We survived the holocaust during 1975-1979 "Killing Field"; we fled to Thai-Cambodian border around May 1979. Different pains and grief we faced, while living in the refugee camp 1979 to 1981.
