Angkor Thom

Angkor Thom is the largest capital of the Angkorian period, it was built by King Jayavarman VII (AD1181-AD1220). Angkor Thom divides into 4 parts by main axis(Tourism Site of Cambodia,by Keo Phoung, publish July 2, 2003, p.100)
It was a Great City from AD802-AD1432, which served as the religious and administrative center of the Khmer Empire.


  • Bayon temple stands as the symbol of God and Heaven.
  • The wall enclosing the city of Angkor Thom represents the stone wall around the universe
  • The surrounding moat suggests the cosmic ocean.
  • The three head elephant represents god Indra.

Angkor Thom is enclosured by 8 meters high laterite wall, distance on each side is 3 km. A moat with width of 100 meters surrounds the outer wall. Four small temples called Chhrung temple, stand on each corner of the city Angkor Thom. A tall Gopuras (gate) 23 meters, distinguished by a super structure of four faces sculptured in the center.

There are 5 entrances to get to Angkor Thom Perimeter:


  • South (Tonle Om) gate
  • East (Death) gate
  • North gate (Dei Chhnang) gate
  • West (Takeo) gate
  • Victory Gate in East, aligning with the Terrace of the Elephants and the Leper King
